It depends what you want to sell. Getting listed in the search engines takes time naturally unless you link to authority sites like digg, ebay or youtube or you could do Pay Per Click with adwords but make sure you set a budget.

Look at mailing lists offline as well to direct people to your sales page.

It does absolutely depend on what you want to promote? If you have a product and site set up then join forums, send ezines and add your site to those for free or you can use paid advertising for another quick result like Google Adwords.

Also if you have a site it will take a while to get on to search engines, however, putting your web address on forums, ezines etc will increase the chances of search engines picking it up with their spiders and get it listed quicker.
