What happens if a person clicks on an ad?

Depends on what kind of ad it is
If it is adsense ad, the click takes you to the merchant's site. The website the ad was originally on gets paid a small commission for each click
If it is a banner ad, the website the ad is on usually gets a monthly sum for displaying the ad, irrespective of the number of clicks generated. The websites that attract banner ads usually have evidence of a lot of traffic
If it is an affiliate ad, then the owner of the website that the ad is displayed on only makes a commission if the visitor takes a specific action after clicking the ad e.g buy''s a product or signs up as a lead at the merchant site
