I've been applying at a bunch of places in my area and have had 15 interviews in the last 4 months, but nothing has come from them. I’m obviously doing something wrong if I am not sticking out to these employers. If I apply somewhere and they say they will get back to me, when should I begin calling them about getting an interview? When I’ve an interview, when should I start calling them about whether I got the job (or if I should even do that)? What would I state in both circumstances? Do you’ve any other suggestions?

Employment is getting tougher and tougher, these days. But that’s a lot of interviews to have without even getting a nibble.

How are you dressing for the interview? Do you look professional? Are you dressed appropriately? If you look serious, they will take you more seriously. Not sure what type of jobs you’re applying for, but I would advocate applying for positions you might have a pre-existing interest in. IE: If your hobby is growing flowers, apply at a greenhouse, and impress the company with your knowledge. Also, calling back depends a lot on what you were told at the interview. In one sentence you state you've had 15 'interviews', in the next, you ask when you should start calling them about getting an interview. Which leads me to ask, are these people even hiring? Filling out an application at a company that isn't hiring could certainly be the problem. So check the help wanted ads and concentrate on companies that are actively seeking employees. Or have a help-wanted sign in their window. No sense in wasting your time or theirs by just randomly showing up and asking to fill out a job application. Once you do find a company that’s hiring, if you don't hear back for a follow-up interview, etc. It is totally fine to call back in a couple of days and ask if they’ve made any decisions yet. Just make sure you find out who you should be calling when you leave your application.

EDIT: Then by all means, call them back. Ask for the manager. Give them your name, tell them you dropped off an application and the date you dropped it off, ask them if they had a chance to take a look at it yet. They’ll normally take charge of the conversation from there. If they state they have not looked at it yet, ask them when they might have the opportunity to look at it and then ask them when it would be a good time for you to call them back. Just be persistant. Though don't sound annoyed. Be polite, but sound interested. I am sure they get a lot of applications. And the squeaky wheel….get's the interview.

At the interview, when they state, “we'll call you”, ask them when they'll be making a decision. Then you can wait until that day to call the HR person to inquire if the position has been filled.

When you call the HR person and they let you know you didn't get the job–you could ask them if you met their requirements and for future reference, what you could do in your next interview to get the job….. I mean it couldn't hurt–at least then you would have some idea of what you could be doing wrong.

At the interview, are you coming prepared??

Did you bring a resume?? Are you dressed appropriately??

Do you have the qualifications that they require??

Or go to a bookstore, find a book “Job Interviews for Dummies” …. sit down…..flip through it…. maybe it has some recommendations. Buy the book if you need to read more.
