Hello,
I read some info from the UK that talks about careers in Development Management. It seems to deal with the problem of managing the growth of developing cities. But what’s the official name for that in the US? I hear that it is simple to get a good payong non-profit job in this, but I'll need the American name for the same career if I’m to get information on it… Thanks
Answer:
Development management is usually the term used for managing initiatives in developing countries (Africa, parts of Asia, parts of Latin America, etc.), as in development relating to human development, community development, institutional development, environmental development, country development, etc. The goals of such development are things like raising the overall literacy rate, reducing the rate of HIV/AIDS infection, increasing the number of young people in employment, etc. People working in development management are particularly concerned with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs):

It is NOT easy to get jobs in development management. Most jobs require at least a Master's Degree, as well as a great deal of on-the-job experience.
The USA doesn't really use this term, and doesn't really have this concept. As one person posted, they do have urban planners, who are concerned with cities. They also have business development professionals, who are concerned with developing a particular neighborhood of a city or region regarding businesses (getting large companies to move there, for instance, or cultivating small businesses, or turning a former rural tract into business area). They also have people concerned with community development, addressing issues regarding safety, environment, quality of life, etc.
