I had to list three references for a professional job I'm applying for. I listed my two previous employers and my college advisor. My one employer already called me to tell me that they’d just contacted her (I had the interview around 10 this morning). My other employer is very hard to get into contact with and my advisor isn't always available. I couldn't list anybody else..what happens if my references are hard to get a hold of? Will they toss me aside?
Answer:
It will probably depend on the employer and what their requirements are. When I owned a business and wasn’t able to get ahold of references, I would call back the applicant and let them know. I then requested additional references. If I couldn't get ahold of anyone, I basically just put the application aside.
I never hired anyone when it was difficult to check out references. But then again, as a small business owner, that was my stipulation. I know the jobs that I and my husband have had - the references have all been contacted.
