I work in the office of a Fortune 500 company, and for some reason, my coworkers insist on being loud, vulgar, sexist, and just plain obnoxious in general. Managers and HR look the other way and pretend that nothing is going on.

I have politely asked them to tone it down, but they’ve told me to “lighten up”. Obviously, I don't belong here, and it is time to begin looking for another job. In the meantime, what are some recommendations for helping me to stay hopeful and positive, and to realize that I’ll survive this?

Answer:
just find another job

Answer:
Miles, you really do have to go with the flow. Each work place has a rhythm, this includes how people treat each other. Obviously rude comments don't have to be tolerated, but, if everyone is ok with it, you're fighting a battle you're not going to win.

Smile along with everyone else, if you don't want to join in you don't have to. Anticipating these folks to “tone it down” just for you is inviting a lot more than just lighten up quips.

If you can't tolerate it at all, get yourself an ipod and get into your own world.
