I am changing career directions and have no idea what salary levels are in this new field. The company offered me the job but instead of telling me what the salary would be they asked me to come back with my salary requirements. How should I respond?

Answer:
Do some research and figure out what the salary ranges are. You can check local newspapers, salary.com (you can input your location and position and it will give you averages, means, and the ranges for base salary and bonus), employment agencies (i.e. RobertHalf.com), or Google the position title and salary ranges (i.e. Controller salary ranges).

Once you know the ranges, consider how your qualifications fit the position description and base your salary requirements on that. Also, when giving your salary requirements, I would hedge it with something like this… "I was looking for x dollars, but it would depend on the total benefits and compensation package." That way it gives you some wiggle room. Or, you could respond with this… "My salary requirements will vary depending on the total compensation and benefits package. What is your hiring range?" That puts it back in their court without you having to give away your position.

Answer:
give a high amount.

Answer:
Look up median salary ranges online for the type of work it is. Give them a low-end figure, since you are entry level, but make sure it's something that you can live with.

Answer:
Ideally, you probably should have done some research prior to applying for the position so you do not waste your time or theirs.

At this point and depending on how much time you have before needing to give them a # I would ask on Yahoo to see if people can tell you what the position makes. If you don't have time left just be honest and come up with a number that will allow you to continue to live your life style as is and maybe just add 10% as a negotiation cushion.

Good Luck!

Answer:
Go to the listed website and click find occupations and type in the job title. click on it and go to the bottom and click on your state. It will give you the ranges for that job. Since you are new you are considered entry level and should pick towards the lower end.

Answer:
You need to do research on the position and find out what is the current salary range. Take into account for demographics, for instance parts of the Northeast and California get paid higher salaries for the same work elsewhere. Before you can submit a salary requirement you need to find out about bonus and compensation plans that are also offered. If a company is offering a generous "package", it might be worth lowering your salary a fraction just to get the position. Never give an exact figure, but a salary range that you would be comfortable with.
