What are the factors of receiving SSDI long term? If you do receive benefits, is that for life? If so/not, can you work a minimum amount each month or not at all?
Answer:
SSDI isn’t a ticket to the high life. A person who was making $40,000 - 50,000 per year will receive about $1250 - 1350 per month. The range is from around $750 per month to around $2000, and there is a Cost of Living increase built in. SSDI payments are tax-free, but supplemental private disability payments are taxable. For people at the lowest end, or for those who didn't have enough work history to qualify for SSDI, there’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to add a bit more.
These sums don’t usually provide a comfortable living (unless you move to Costa Rica). However, people can earn up to $800 / month on the side without jeopardizing their disability income.
Remember that SSDI is “Long-Term Disability”, NOT “Permanent Disability.” It might turn out to be permanent, but SSA's Ticket to Work program may give people ways back into the economy. Tickets to Work include rehabilitation and vocational services, maintenance of Medicare after starting back to work, and a five-year grace period during which applicants can get their disability reinstated if their job doesn't work out.
The option of working from home or having a home business is something you might think about. This often works for people with disabilities or chronic illness, because they can make their own schedule and their own rules. For purposes of maintaining disability eligibility, SSA considers net income after all expenses are deducted. In practice, this means that people can earn a considerable income while disabled, enough to have a decent, productive life.
