It depends. If you chose after-tax coverage the disability benefits you receive will be tax-free. If you chose a pre-tax basis coverage, the premium is tax-free and the disability benefits you receive at the time of filing the claim are taxable. My husband has used short-term disability twice in his life and we paid taxes on it, but since the payout wasn't that much, our taxes weren't either. We never get a tax refund anyway because I'm self-employed and perpetually paying taxes.
