Is there usually some term of their contract with the regular workers that prohibits them from doing this? Are there legal considerations that make it hard for them to do this? Is there a difference between government employees and non-government employees in terms of rights and privileges? Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that I support this course of action whenever there is a strike. It's just that, from the employer's standpoint, it seems like the most straightforward way of dealing with the problem.

some of them do. but the union sets up picket lines at the companies buildings where ever they are. the new hires are called " scabs " and they have to cross the picke line and sometimes it gets a little harry. usually when a contract is signed the scabs are let go and union people come back. occasionally some scabs get to stay but there is always tension between them and sometimes violence. also other union members who might deliver goods to the striking company wont cross the picket line so goods arent delivered.

Employers do hire scabs when they want to break the strike. They have to train everyone so they need some of the stiking workers to cross the line. In some companies management is not allowed to join the union so the management people have to do all the jobs during the strike.

Every situation calls for different scenario. Depends on the strike, you will need to replace many workers, and train them, and register them into the system… all that process cost allot of money to the company. Another scenario is if striking employees are a part of a union and that requires a settlement of agreements devised by the union and the company. Replacing union employees maybe a problem since the replaced employees might be a part of the union also.

One reason is, it can be physically dangerous to cross the picket line. The useless union workers resort to violence to protect their strike. People have even been killed trying to cross a picket line.
Bottom line is, Union workers are the laziest people in the world, yet expect to be paid the highest salary.

I have a friend that is a Union worker for an Engine plant. He goes in, punches the clock, then goes to the casino for a few hours. Comes back works for about an hour then takes off for lunch for a couple hours. Then comes back and maybe works a couple hours then punches out.
The Union defends this kinda crap. So, basically he may work about 3 hours a day, yet gets paid for 8 hours.
It's no wonder this country is outsourcing it's jobs to get cheaper labor. Because the Unions can't do crap if a company just folds up and leaves because it can no longer be profitable do to a Union/

Picketing is a method of attention drawing, Publicly outlining possible unfair practices or treatment.
Some companies do reserve the right to shut out striking employees after a set amount of time, if they don't reach an agreement.
Unions' are based on a democratic platform, where it's leaders are voted into office. Voters like in other Governments are not chosen.
