It increases sales to business near the stadium. Ticket sales increase the value of the franchise and a lot of that money goes into promoting charities.

During gamedays or even for a few days before a large event, there are many people that travel to the area including many people from out of town. Those people spend money and businesses are rewarded as well as the government because of money from sales tax. The only disadvantage is the number of police needed to control the event.
